21st Century Enlightenment

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.  Margaret Meade

SINGER BURKE ZIMMER & BUTLER

Yes, we’ve changed our name to more properly reflect our group of thoughtful, committed citizens as we enter the second decade of the 21st Century. Our tendency as human beings is to make right and true that which is merely familiar and wrong or false that which is only strange. For many of us, the first third of life is spent educating ourselves, the second third of life is spent working (building a career) and/or caring for others (building a family/community), and the last third of life contains much reflection about how we spent the first two thirds and what we can/will change going forward to make our lives more meaningful. We highly recommend you visit the RSA website to hear and/or view an animation of Matthew Taylor’s talk on 21st Century Enlightenment. Here’s a direct link to the RSA Animate website animated videos  http://comment.rsablogs.org.uk/videos/

Highlights:
  • 21st Century Enlightenment emphasizes expanding empathy’s reach to help address/resolve the global issues we face.
  • What we aim for can be as important to our well being as what we achieve.
  • Live responsibly; live sustainably.
  • Encourage creative people who want to make a difference.
  • Be intolerant to negativity, rigid thinking and self promotion.
  • Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.  Margaret Meade
May you aim for and achieve the self aware autonomy that comes with 21st Century enlightenment.

Every good wish for 2011 from Singer Burke Zimmer & Butler.

Richard Singer

As the Chief Operating Officer of SB Capital Management, Richard provides leadership in all aspects of the investment process as well as the general management of Singer Burke’s SEC-registered investment arm. Richard's ability to perform fundamental analyses on alternative investments such as private equity and hedged instruments enables him to structure non-traditional investment portfolios. His ability to explain investments in terms that non-experts can understand is also of key value to our clients and one reason why SB Capital Management, Inc. has become such an important partner to many Singer Burke clients. Under Richard’s stewardship, SB Capital Management’s assets under management have grown from $0 in 2002 to around $370 million in 2010.

Richard began his relationship with Wall Street more than 25 years ago while in Tokyo (of all places!) at Amway Japan, where he assisted the CEO during the Company’s initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. Thereafter, Richard spent five years managing strategic investments in the technology sector. As an Associate in the division that managed Hikari Tsushin’s $750 million venture capital war chest, Richard led the Company’s investments into Webex, Signal Soft, and Colo.com after evaluating hundreds of Silicon Valley ventures. After Signal Soft’s IPO on the New York Stock Exchange, the Company hired Richard to start their Japanese subsidiary and lead their corporate development and strategic investing throughout Asia.

Richard is an avid surfer and ski mountaineer and is fluent in Japanese. He plays the acoustic guitar but is not very good. He is a native Angeleno and currently resides in Topanga with his wife, Mia, and their beloved dog, Toyon. He teaches financial responsibility to high school students through Operation Hope and holds a B.A. degree in International Relations from UCLA and a MBA from the University of Washington.
